EC to replace Akosombo Dam spillage victims Voter ID cards for free

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has indicated that Voter Identity (ID) card replacement will be free for victims who suffered from the Akosombo dam spillage.

This pronouncement was in response to an appeal by NDC General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, who urged the EC to replace voter ID cards that victims of the recent Akosombo dam spillage lost.

Addressing the issue at a press conference, Mr Kwetey underscored the gravity of the spillage and urged the EC to act quickly to replace the cards.

In response, the EC highlighted in a statement that it is a responsible body and will assist all eligible voters to participate in the upcoming general election.

According to the EC, it will “fulfil that duty by replacing voter ID cards, which is set to begin on May 30, 2024.”

“Recognising the untold hardships and economic loss suffered by victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, we agree with Fifi Kwetey of the NDC to support them,” the EC said in response to Mr. Kwetey’s proposal.

“In a show of support and goodwill, the commission is pleased to announce that voter ID cards for those affected by the Akosombo dam spill will be replaced at no cost to them.”
