EC is not solely responsible for peaceful elections – Bossman Asare

Dr. Bossman Asare on peace

The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Bossman Asare, has made a bold claim about the activities of the commission. According to him, the electoral body is not mandated to ensure a peaceful election.

This comment is seen as a response to claims by some prominent Ghanaians, including Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who stated that the EC’s actions are a threat to the country’s democracy.

Speaking to the press on Monday, September 2, 2024, Dr. Bossman said, “The suggestion that the peace and the outcome of the election are hinged on the chairperson of the EC is completely untrue. We urge the public to ignore statements even from prominent citizens that suggest that achieving peaceful elections in 2024 is somehow in the bosom of the chairperson of the EC.”

Speaking at the Crusaders Against Corruption event in Accra, on the theme, “The Scarface of Corruption in Ghana: How Corruption Brings About Poverty,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed the opinion that the operations of the EC could destabilize the country into conflict.

According to Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe “We have had leaders, I am saying that at the moment, the greatest threat to our democracy is the electoral commission. That is the greatest threat to our democracy and if we are not careful, we will lead this country into destruction. Mark my words. Why do I say so? How on earth can transfers be made from one particular constituency to another without the consent of the person? these are facts.”
