In a media encounter, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Electoral Services, has said that the Electoral Commission (EC) will announce a new date for the District Level Election.

Following the postponement of the commission’s original October 3, 2023, announcement earlier this year, it has come under fire for cancelling the old date without providing a reason.

Dr. Serebour, on the other hand, assured that the election will take place by December of this year, when the current assembly members’ four-year terms would have expired.

He went on to say that the commission will meet soon to decide on a new election date.

He added that the EC will announce a new election schedule by next week.

While waiting for the new date, the Director of Electoral Services said voter registration and exhibition would continue in preparation for the main event.

At least 1.5 million Ghanaians aged 18 between 2021 and 2023 are expected to be added to the register.

The electoral body has been challenged in its proposed new Constitutional Instrument (CI) to abolish the guarantor system, but Parliament has asked it to keep it.

According to the EC, the guarantor system did not produce a credible voter register because it allowed non-Ghanaians to be rolled onto it.

Dr. Serebour was speaking yesterday during a national stakeholder dialogue in Accra.

While Ghanaians await the new date, civil society organisations are advocating for increased participation of women and marginalised groups in an inclusive democracy.

Only 245 women were directly elected out of the 6,000 assembly members elected in the last election.
