The NDC in the East Tema Constituency has petitioned the police command to provide protection for their Member of Parliament against the NPP.
Alhassan Masuna, the East Tema NDC’s Communication Director, said the urgent call for the protection for Isaac Ashai Odamtten, the MP, is due to an alleged wild statement by Henry Quartey, Greater Accra Regional (GAR) Minister, that the NPP in the constituency should organise its base for a pending by-election in the constituency.
He said the GAR Minister told this to the area’s NPP executive at a closed-door meeting in Tema on his last visit.
The declaration by Mr Quartey, Alhassan Masanu and the NDC as some plot to assassinate Isaac Ashai Odamtten, which is the only possible way that a by-election could be organised.
Isaac Ashai Odamtten was the Tema MCE from 2013 to 2016, when his party lost power to the ruling NPP.
His successor and the NPP, as well as the former MP for the constituency, Titus Glover, claimed Mr Odamtten embezzled and misappropriated the assembly’s funds when he was the MCE.
He expressed surprise that the NPP in East Tema and government did not press criminal charges against Isaac Odamtten from 2017 until November 30, last year, when Titus Glover got EOCO to arrest Odamtten.
The arrest came only seven days to the general elections, but that, Alhassan Masuna said did not inhibit Isaac Odamtten and the NDC to work hard to beat Titus Glover to the seat in the parliamentary elections.
“Isaac Ashai Odamtten’s popularity soared so high that it showed on John Mahama’s votes which appreciated by 51 per cent in the constituency in 2020, an unprecedented feat for the NDC in the constituency,” Alhassan Masuna pointed out.
“The elections are over but for Henry Quartey to come to Tema to assure the NPP to mobilise their grassroots for a possible by-election in the constituency raises huge concerns to us of suspicion of some deadly moves against the MP.
“Given this, the NDC in East Tema constituency has petitioned the IGP, Tema Regional Police Command, the NDC MPs in Parliament and Parliament on our suspicion of death threats on our MP, and requested that his security be beefed up,” he noted.
He, however said the party’s internal security will also be beefed up around the MP.
