The Bono Regional Youth Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Efo Worlanyo Tsekpo has alleged that there is a possible mass failure of Ghanaian students in the 2020 West African Secondary School Certificate Examination – a reason why Ghana’s results are yet released.
According to the vociferous youth leader in a Facebook post sighted by Awake News, “Deep throat sources at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have revealed that there was an unprecedented mass failure in the examination leading to only 23 percent of students passing all subjects.”
He said the situation has forced President Akufo-Addo to direct “WAEC through the Minister for Education Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to change the results such that more students will pass the exams.”
He further alleged that “This directive is creating tension between the Board of WAEC and Akufo-Addo’s government.” adding that some of the examiners and experts attributed the “unprecedented mass failure to the obnoxious double-track system that was introduced as a result of the free SHS program which led to limited instructional time for teaching and learning.”
In July this year, the total number of candidates that sat for the examinations was 375, 737, comprising of 187,574 males and 188,163 females.
It was also the first batch of government’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) students to partake in the WASSCE.
