The national house of Chiefs have issued their statement and throwing their weight in support of Ghanaians who are in strict resistance for the ECs decision to compile a new register for the conduct of election, 2020.
In their statement widely circulated and reported by social media platforms and other media stations across the country, they expressed their anger and discontent against the ECs disrespect for the House of Chiefs by failing to honour their invitation for dialogue on this issue of the new register compilation. “Central to the escalating tension is the decision of the Electoral (EC) Commission to compile new voters’ register. Unfortunately, the EC failed to honour invitations to the National House of Chiefs, when our traditional leaders wanted opportunity to promote dialogue in the inerest of peace” their statement said.
They are outraged by that disingenuous actions towards elders and most distinguished and revered Chiefs representing an independent voices and the masses of this country.
They are unhappy with the manner in which our media stations have been degenerated to ‘ a war zone’ of words creating very hot political environment in the country with its attendant in looming catastrophe on this nation of ours.
In support of their argument against the compilation of the new voter’s register which Madam Jean Mensah is bent on compilation come rain or sunshine, they mentioned the state at which our country is; with issues of Corona Virus infections at highest peak of records, the CSM endemic in the Upper West Region, flooding as the rain sets-in and joblessness which rather a need a collective bargaining and effort to fight these enemies. Instead, the focus of discussion is being shifted to the ill informed decision to compile a new register with the air filled with tantrums, viciousness at incubation stage, and ferocious tirade against political opponents in the rise. The threat to plunge this country of ours into chaos and crisis is alarming and that should not happen because someone need to win an election at all cost to the detriment of the citizen and vulnerable in this country. In reiterating their point for the EC to be exercise its mandate judiciously without any malice, they said, ” We all have to remember that power is not exercised in a vacuum and so it would be naive of anyone to think that a constitutional created ” independent body” has unbridled power. That cannot be the intention of the framers of the constitution “.
In their concluding statement, they are calling the EC to go back to back to the table to engage all the political actors to iron all lingering issues creating any suspension and to restore confidence in the system in order that it doesn’t lead us to any point of no return bearing in mind how well we have come as a Democratic state. In their appeal, they said the EC should not disenfranchise any qualified Ghanaian from taking part in the election process in order to avert any incidence of election violence and crisis.
