United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees-Ghana (UNHCR-Ghana) is calling on international communities and well-meaning groups or individuals for support to reach out to the several citizens of Mozambique who have been displaced in the Cyclone Idai disaster.
According to the UNHCR-Ghana, emergency core relief items and shelter are being airlifted to Mozambique to cater for about 30,000 of the most vulnerable populations, including displaced people, refugees and host communities.
Already, relief items have been taken to Beira, in the central region of Mozambique to serve 10,000 people affected by the devastating disaster.
The UNHCR disclosed in a post on Instagram that, “Early this morning, our emergency teams & Regional Representative Valentin Tapsoba were on the ground in #Mozambique to receive critical supplies for those affected by #CycloneIdai. The items will then be then transported by road to Beira, the epicenter of the cyclone devastation, as the road from Maputo to Beira has now been cleared. On March 14, 2019, a category two storm known as Tropical Cyclone Idai ripped through Mozambique flooding an area of 3,000 sq km and razed down buildings.
It is estimated that about a thousand people have been killed and more than half a million rendered homeless as towns and villages were submerged in the flood.
The toll according to experts could be higher as more bodies may be found as floodwaters drain away.
Latest updates suggest that cases of cholera have been recorded in the Mozambican city of Beira due to the squalid conditions in which the large numbers of victims have been living since Cyclone Idai tragedy.
