More than 1000 persons in the Volta region have been infected with the Delta variant in the past four weeks as the country continues to experience the third wave of the pandemic.
The region’s recent case count is about 27% percent of the commulative 3,852 cases recorded in the region since the outbreak of the pandemic in April, 2020.
According to the Volta Regional Deputy Director of the Ghana Health Service in-charge of Public Health, Dr. Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, the increasing cases is as a result of the disregard for the Covid-19 protocols by residents and the low vaccination coverage in the region.
The Volta region is one of the regions identified recently as a hotspot for the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Currently, the Volta region has 241 active cases.
The Ho Municipality has 164 cases, Kpando has 38, Ketu South and North with 11 cases each as the South Tongu records 10 cases. The North Dayi district has 3 active cases, South Dayi and Central Tongu Districts have 2 cases each.
As a result of the increasing cases, the region, the Regional Public Health Emergency Management Committee last week, directed all 18 Municipal and District Assemblies to reactivate and strictly enforce the Covid-19 protocols using the district Covid-19 task forces which include personnel of the Ghana Police Service, the Military and the Immigration Service.
Despite the increasing cases, the Volta region is yet to be allocated the Johnson and Johnson vaccine which is being administered in hotspot areas in the country.
