COVID-19: Minister’s letter banning prostitution causes a stir on social media

The Northern Regional Security Council in a letter has sent a directive banning all forms fo prostitution and allied activity in Tamale amid the spread of the corona virus in the country.

But the letter has caused a stir on social media with many questioning why the minister is seeking to ban an activity which is already illegal in the constitution of Ghana.

Why ban an act which is already illegal???

In Ghana, prostitution is a criminal act which attracts a fine or misdemeanour or both.

The Criminal Code, 1960 (Act 29) in Section 276 as amended by section 14 of Act 554 provides that, “any person who persistently solicits or importunes in any public place or in sight of any public place for the purpose of prostitution shall be liable for a first offence to a fine and for a second or subsequent offences shall be guilty of a misdemeanour.” See also According to section 275.
