Continuous detention of Volta separatists: IYAS wants Volta Chiefs to speak

A pressure group, Intelligent Youth of Afadzato South (IYAS) is calling on the Volta Regional House of Chiefs to speak on what they described as an abuse of the rights of arrested Volta separatists over their continuous. detention in police cells.

The group in a statement signed by a member of the Communication Team, Mr. Samuel Kwame and copied Awake News, said “the arrest of hundred other people from the region for expressing support for these citizens [members of the Homeland Study Group Foundation] in a demonstration by the police, are all evidence of intimidations and suppression of fundamental human rights of the people in the region”

According to the group, irrespective of the alleged crimes committed by the separatists, the state ought to respect their human rights.

“As pressure group and a developmental agent from the Afadzato South Constituency, Volta and Ghana at large. It is our conviction that irrespective of the sensitivity of the crime committed by this group against the nation, their fundamental human rights ought to be respected, having that their conducts from the onset were civil devoid of any kind of force and disrespect”

They are, therefore, not happy Chiefs in the region are silent on the issue when they [the chiefs] are the primary beneficiaries of actions of the separatists.

“We are on this light calling on your constitutionally respected office and also for the fact that you stand as a direct beneficiary of outcomes from their actions whether favourable or otherwise to intervene and speak for their rights and liberties to be restored whiles the law takes its cause.”

IYAS fears the situation if nothing is done could “deterioration” further.

“We are therefore urging your good office to as a matter of urgency intervene to save the situation from further deterioration on our long-held virtue as our brother’s keepers”

VOLTA REGIONAL HOUSE OF CHIEFS MUST SPEAK TO THE WOES OF THE REGION – A CALL BY INTELLIGENT YOUTH OF AFADZATO SOUTH (IYAS).

We call on you with a very deep concern in regard to the recent happenings confronting the development and welfare of the good people of the great Volta region.

With much respect to your office, we extend our warmest felicitations for the good works you are doing as Custodians of Tradition and Culture of our beautiful land.

As our progenitors have it that, ‘one does not show the direction to his home using the left arm’ so have we resolve as a citizen of Volta land home and abroad not to sit down to be robbed from injustice and deliberately marginalization from the hands of political actor’s.

The recent happenings in the region have awakened our judgements as concern citizens from which we seek to invoke your consciousness for a pragmatic solution toward addressing them.

First among this is the arrest and detention of a group of persons belonging to ‘The Homeland Study Group Foundation’ from the region on allegations of planning a breakaway from the country.

This matter very well known to you as Custodians of the land deserves no further explanation. As we speak, except Papavi Kudzodzi Hogbedetor, the leader of the group that has been granted bail on condition of old age and health, the remaining five (5) of our citizens are still languishing in the police cell.

Subsequently, the arrest of hundred other people from the region for expressing support for this citizens in a demonstration by the police, are all evidence of intimidations and suppression of fundamental human rights of the people in the region.

As pressure group and a developmental agent from the Afadzato South Constituency, Volta and Ghana at large. It is our conviction that irrespective of the sensitivity of the crime committed by this group against the nation, their fundamental human rights ought to be respected, having that their conducts from the onset were civil devoid of any kind of force and disrespect.

We condemned the manner in which these citizens were whisked away from the region with formed military contingents like a terrorist when as a matter of fact their conduct don’t pose any form of threat to the nation.

We are on this light calling on your constitutionally respected office and also for the fact that you stand as a direct beneficiary of outcomes from their actions whether favourable or otherwise to intervene and speak for their rights and liberties to be restored whiles the law takes its cause.

We again want to state that, your seeming inaction and lack of commentary on this case as a leading arm in the region is creating serious patriotism concerns among citizens far and near with tendencies of dwindling interest patriotically.

We are therefore urging your good office to as a matter of urgency intervene to save the situation from further deterioration on our long-held virtue as our brother’s keepers.

Secondly, in our recount on the developmental concerns of the region revealed the constant neglect and lack of interest in the affairs of the region.

First among these concerns is the Eastern Corridor Road project that have stalled due to political ill will. The situation as we speak is hindering on the quality of life of people and commercial progress in the region.

We recall very vividly when the president of the republic, Nana Akuffo Addo, during the State of The Nation (SONA) 2018, address to parliament promised to find resources to complete the project after directing for works to stop on allegations of contract irregularities having assumed power in 2016.

Anyone would have thought for almost 3 years halting progress on the project, findings would be made public for appropriate sanction to whoever that is found culpable.

It is rather unfortunate and insulting for the President, Nana Akuffo Addo, to lose count of start on the project and begin to rearward it on contract from the middle belt, leaving behind the beginning portion unattended to the detriment of the good people of the region.

We in Intelligent Youth of Afadzato South (IYAS), have found the Presidents action as vindictive and in alignment toward a parochial interest. We are in accordance to his conduct appealing to your good office to add your voice to the call in getting clarifications from the President on his approach.

There is a saying that, ‘he that seeks must have a long hand’ we are by that proverbial statement proposing a visit by your good office to the President to ascertain first-hand information on resolves of the project.

We are counting on your swift support and respond to these concerns.
