The chief who allegedly opened fire at military officers killing one instantly has been arrested and transferred to Accra. According to an eyewitness account, the Chief, Benlord Ababio was arrested immediately after he killed the military officer.

He was later transferred to Accra as the Millenium City Police feared landguards in the area could gang up and attack the station.

Background

A military officer believed to be in his late 30s was killed while two other officers narrowly avoided death.

The unfortunate incident according to Citi News sources occurred in front of the Millennium City Police station in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.

Information gathered indicates that a brother to one of the Military officers purchased a piece of land at Millennium City from chiefs. However, their efforts to develop the land were always met with fierce resistance from land guards.

The military officer who met his untimely death went there in the company of two other officers hoping to find solutions for the prolonged land dispute. This was after they previously complained to the Millennium City District Police Command.

The officers drove in a Toyota Rav 4 with registration number GR 3591-24 to the land on April 30, 2024. Upon reaching the site, they saw people working on the land and instructed them to halt.  They then proceeded to the Millennium City District Police Station to report the new development.

According to the source, they were met by the Gyasehene of Millennium City, Benlord Ababio who insisted they should not continue following up the case with the police.

The military officers brushed aside the orders and decided to go to the Divisional Command since efforts at the District Command could not solve the case. Angered by the action of the military officer and his friends, the chief opened fire at the vehicle of the officers from behind leading to the death of the military officer.

An eyewitness narrating the incident said “I saw the incident happen right in front of me. The Chief, Benload Ababio met the military officers at the District Police station and was trying to speak to them not to go to the Divisional Police Command but they didn’t listen.

“While they were heading to the Divisional command just after moving their vehicle the Gyamehene Benlord Ababio fired at their vehicle just behind them leading to one of the officers dying in the process. Two other officers escaped unhurt but the chief was arrested immediately after the incident and sent to the Divisional Police Command.”
