Manchester United are hopeful of keeping rising star Kobbie Mainoo at Old Trafford beyond the summer, even as uncertainty over his contract continues to cast doubt on his long-term future.

The 18-year-old midfielder has stood out with moments of brilliance during a season affected by injuries, including a stunning equaliser in United’s thrilling 5-4 Europa League win over Lyon. Despite his limited time on the pitch, Mainoo has become one of the most talked-about prospects in English football.

Earlier reports suggested that Mainoo was attracting strong interest from clubs like Chelsea, and there were claims he rejected a contract extension while prioritising a move abroad. However, a new report from The Athletic’s David Ornstein now says there is a growing belief within the club that the youngster will remain with United next season.

Mainoo’s current contract, signed in February 2023, runs until 2027. It reflects the terms expected for a youth player at the time, but his rapid rise to becoming an England international and FA Cup final goal scorer has changed the conversation. He is now said to be pushing for a revised salary in the region of £180,000 per week.

The midfielder’s current deal falls far below that figure, and while the club acknowledges the need to reward his performances, new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly enforcing strict financial controls. This has led to suggestions that United would be willing to sell Mainoo for a suitable offer, with an estimated price tag of £70 million.

Although United are not actively shopping him to other clubs, the lack of a new agreement has left fans and analysts questioning the club’s commitment to securing its most promising talent.

Mainoo, a product of the club’s academy and a lifelong Manchester United fan, is seen as a future midfield leader. Whether he remains at the club will depend on how quickly the leadership acts to match his growing value with a competitive deal.
