BECE candidates to write Arabic, 2 other new subjects

BECE candidates

West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that the final-year Junior High School (JHS) students will write three new subjects in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

According to WAEC, only two of the new subjects; Career Technology and Creative Art and Design are compulsory for all students. Arabic is an optional subject for Islamic Basic Schools across the country.

Apart from Arabic which is a new subject, the other two were already part of the examination but were boxed together as Basic Design and Technology (BDT). The new development means students will now write Career Technology and Creative Art and Design as separate subjects.

As a result of the changes, the period of the examinations has been extended by an additional day. This makes it six examination days, from the previous five days.

The 2024 BECE will run from July 8 to July 15, 2024.

WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, John Kapi, told the Daily Graphic that the Council will commence “printing” the examination materials very soon. He added that the Council is on schedule and will deliver as expected.
