The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, in accordance with government promise to Organised Labour has instructed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to lay the Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, before parliament for revocation.
Godfred Dame revealed the directive is in response to the promise from president Nana Akufo Addo to ban illegal mining thereby protecting the already polluted water bodies and forest reserves and farmlands destroyed by ‘galamsey’.
L.I. 2462 allows for mining in Forest Reserves leading to the destruction of Ghana’s ecologically zones.
In a statement addressed to the EPA the AG indicated that the revocation of L.I 2462 is government’s relentless resolve to prioritize lives and protect the environment.
Organized Labour called off a nationwide strike that was scheduled for October 10, to pressure government to declare a state of emergency on illegal mining after the president assured them of delivering on his promise by ending the canker.
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), are the only Union that are on a nationwide strike over the menace of ‘galamsey’. They are demanding government halt all activities of mining, before a broader consultation on how to stop the destruction of the environment.
