A police inspector identified as Bright Appiah Danquah, stationed at Abuakwa in the Ashanti Region, has been arrested for allegedly robbing more than eight mobile money vendors in separate incidents across Kumasi and its surrounding communities.

Authorities say the suspect is believed to have attacked vendors at gunpoint, making away with significant sums of cash in each incident. One victim, Victoria Arkon, speaking to Crime Check, described her traumatic ordeal — recounting how the inspector robbed her of GH¢38,600 at gunpoint, leaving her deeply traumatised.

"The situation left me so traumatised that I urinated on myself. My one-year-old baby was also badly affected by the ordeal."

A bizarre twist at the police station

In one unusual incident, the suspect reportedly left his mobile phone behind at a victim's counter after completing a robbery. He later went ahead of the victim to the Adabraka Police Station to lodge a complaint that his phone had been stolen — even requesting that officers trace the device.

A publication by Crimechecknewsgh indicates that the situation left officers and the victim shocked when both parties arrived at the station to report related incidents at the same time.

Suspect remanded alongside three accomplices

Inspector Bright Appiah Danquah and three alleged accomplices — comprising one other police officer and two civilians — have consequently been remanded into custody as investigations by the Ghana Police Service continue.

The Kumasi Central Police Station confirmed that several MoMo vendors had already filed similar complaints against the same suspect before the arrest was made, suggesting the robberies had been ongoing for some time.

Policemen who foiled a related robbery promoted

In a related development, IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno promoted seven officers for their bravery and swift response during a recent mobile money robbery foiled in the Tema area. The officers were recognised for engaging armed suspects who were later shot and arrested following a chase and an exchange of gunfire.

The promotions were widely applauded by the public and seen as a signal of the IGP's commitment to rewarding professionalism and bravery within the Ghana Police Service ranks.

This is really disturbing. A police officer sworn to protect citizens using his position to rob the very people he should protect. The Ghana Police Service must take this seriously and ensure he faces the full force of the law.

The fact that he went back to the police station to report his own phone as stolen is the most shocking part. That level of boldness is unbelievable. Glad he has been caught.

My prayers go out to Victoria and all the other victims. GH¢38,600 is not a small amount. MoMo vendors work so hard for their money. The perpetrators must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
