Announcing his passing on social media, Sir Sam Jonah described him as “a true patriot, a visionary entrepreneur, and a giant of industry.”

Banda transformed Ghana’s shipping and aviation sectors, founding Antrak Shipping and expanding air travel across West Africa.

“He saw potential where others saw decline,” Jonah recalled, referencing Banda’s ambitious but thwarted bid to revive Ghana Airways. However, “his entanglement with politics proved costly.”

Beyond business, Banda’s life was an inspiration. “He proved that success is not confined to those with extensive formal education,” Jonah said.

He concluded, “Ghana and Africa owe him a debt of gratitude. His life’s work has left an indelible mark.”

He will be buried today by Islamic tradition.
