Following claims by the resigned Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu that he has death threats and intelligence on plots by some elements within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to burn down his house, President Akufo-Addo has directed the Inspector General of Police to give Martin Amidu 24hours protection.
In a Facebook post, the Communication Director for the President, Eugene Arhin disclosed that the IGP has been directed by the President to provide Mr Amidu with 24-hour security protection.
“The attention of the Office of the President has been drawn to claims by Mr Martin Amidu, the former Special Prosecutor, of threats made against his life since his resignation from office. The President has, thus, directed the Inspector General of Police to provide Mr Amidu immediately with 24 hour police protection,” he wrote on his timeline.
Mr Amidu, popularly known as Citizen Vigilante added that President Akufo-Addo should be held responsible should anything happen to him, since several calls to the National Security about the concerns of his safety have gone unanswered.
Mr Amidu has been urged to cooperate with the police to ensure that he is protected against such threats.
“The former Special Prosecutor is also encouraged to assist the police with details of persons who have made these threats against his life, so that they can be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the country.”
However, many Ghanaians are with fear that 24hour Police Protection the President has directed the Inspector General of Police to offer the outspoken anti-corruption crusader is equal to placing the former Special Prosecutor who has warned the government to stop attacking him else he “will wash their dirty linens in public” under house arrest to prevent him from further making any statement or actions that will further damage the image of the government as the nation heads to the polls in the next 17days.
In an interview with Citi FM’s Umaru Sanda Amadu, Mr. Amidu earlier stated that he does need any police protection but the President be held responsible should anything happen to him saying he has been receiving death threats since he released the Agyapa Royalties anti-corruption reports and poised on prosecuting those involved in breaching any law.
If readers can recall, Mr. Martin Amidu stated in the Press Statement announcing his resignation that the event of November 12, 2020 [the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings] “removed the only protection I had from the threats and plans directed at me for undertaking the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption assessment report and dictates that I resign as the Special Prosecutor immediately. “
