Deputy Greater Regional Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress, Amos Blessing Amorse has rebuffed claims that President Akufo-Addo is committed to fighting the spread of the deadly corona virus.
According to him, while the President portrays himself in public as someone overly concerned about the health of Ghanaians, his main focus is how to get the Electoral Commission to compile a new register in furtherance of his second term bid.
“The President’s public posturing is very deceptive. When he appears in public, he pretends to be concerned about the spread of the virus. You cannot be concerned about something when in fact you are urging your appointees to do things that will spread the virus,” the youth leader of the biggest opposition party wrote on his Facebook wall.
He alleged that the decision by the National Identification Authority to go ahead with its mass registering exercise in the Eastern region despite the President’s directive is an indication that “Mr Akufo-Addo is interested in how to win the next election than how to fight the virus”
“The NIA boss is an appointees of the President so if he does not have the support of the President, he cannot say he’ll not comply with his orders. If the President feels Ken Attafuah has gone against his orders, why has he not fired him? The compilation of a new register is dependent on the ECOWAS card so if the process is halted, then the EC cannot go ahead with its planned registration” he explained.
Mr Amorse stated that the Constitutional Instrument laid in Parliament indicate that the ECOWAS card ‘is the primary document to be used to prove nationality in respect of acquiring a voters ID card. So Attafuah is carrying out the directives of the President not to halt the exercise.”
President Nana Akufo-Addo has ordered the closure of all schools and universities in Ghana as his administration moves to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and has voted $100 million to fight the virus.
Earlier on Sunday afternoon, health authorities announced that six cases of the disease have been recorded in the country within a period of less than 48 hours.
On Sunday evening, in a televised address the President ordered the closure of all educational institutions with effect from Monday, March 16, 2020.
“All universities, Senior High Schools and Basic Schools, i.e. public and private, will be closed from Monday, March 16 until further notice,” the President said.
Despite all these initiative, Mr Amorse says the President is only playing to the gallery, insisting that “all evidence points to the fact that the President is prioritizing his reelection bid.”
