Some traders who have been conducting business at the Makola Market, part of which got destroyed by fire last month, yesterday got stranded when they got to the scene to realize that, the affected structures were demolished by a Joint police and military team assigned the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), leaving behind debris.
The traders who expressed their concern on Accra-based Joy FM (JoyNews) on Monday, August 23, have pleaded with the authorities to speed up the clearing of the debris to enable them continue to conduct their trading activities.
“We came to meet our tables dismantled; we don’t know when we will be allowed to come back to trade since they are asking us to leave. We have debts to pay and debtors are on our necks”, the traders told JoyNews.
Following announcement by the Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, on Saturday, August 21, the taskforce on Sunday, August 22 pulled down a number of structures which were affected by the July fire outbreak.
A seven-member committee of enquiry that was commissioned to investigate the factors that led to the disaster recommended among other measures demolition of the existing market structure for reconstruction.
