The Volta Regional Chapter of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has thrown its support behind residents following their decision to embark on protests against the government to demand the reopening of the land border with Togo.
The border has been closed to passenger traffic since March 2020 as part of measure to curb the spread of the Covid-19.
According to the party in a statement signed by the Regional Communication Officer, Mr. Sorkpa K. Agbleze, the closure has brought hardship on the people.
The demonstration dubbed, ”Open Our Borders” is scheduled for Friday, August 27, 2021 and will be led by the Member of Parliament for the Area, Abla Dzifa Gomashie.
Mr. Agbleze says the NDC believes that the President Akufo-Addo led government’s “decision to close the land border is bringing untold hardship on the people of the Volta region and other border towns in the country” as the air borders which was closed for the same purpose has long been opened.
The Volta NDC, therefore, called on its members to join the demonstration whiles charging all participants to adhere to the Covid-19 safety protocols.
“As we call on our supporters to join the demonstration, we also call on the organizers to ensure that participants strictly observe all the covid 19 protocols”.
