Afadjato South: KNUST students build washroom facility for Liati-Wote

The Grassroots Initiative for Development (GIFD), a three-member team comprising Wisdom Kpegba, Abdul-Baki Umar, and Esenam Gifty Agbodza, has constructed a washroom for the Liati Wote community. The project was handed over to the community at a ceremony on 19th November 2020.

This project is part of the requirements of their MSc Development Management program at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KUNST) under the course, Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy Project (SEaP).

The facility has a total capacity of 10 people at a time; 5 males and 5 females. It is equipped with running water and 8 hand wash stations to encourage people to wash their hands after using the facility.

In attendance at the handing over ceremony were the Chief of Liati Wote Togbe Kordadza IV, his elders, Queen Mother of Liati Wote, Mama Agbonor II, students from the primary school, community members and the Head Pastor of Evangelical Presbyterian Church of the District.

The team leader, Gifty Agbodza, iterated during the handing over that, the group applied the Participatory Rural Appraisal Approach (PRA) to initiate and execute the project. With this approach, the community was involved in the entire project from start to finish. The community supported the project by providing labour and materials such as wood and sand.

On a broader level, the project is aligned with Goal Six of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs), which seeks to ensure clean water and sanitation for all.

This project will go a long way to enhance the community’s sanitation, especially among students of Liati Wote primary school who, hitherto depended on an old and dilapidated washroom. A situation that led to unsanitary urination around the school compound, which is unhygienic.

The team also donated liquid soaps and face masks to the community to further promote safety and support the fight against COVID 19.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief of Liati Wote Togbe Kodadza, commended the team and KNUST (DM-IDL) for this bold initiative.

He further pledged, on behalf of the community, to maintain the facility well and urged others to emulate such initiatives in order to promote development in the area.

The Chairman of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) also spoke at the ceremony on behalf of the parents and teachers.

He stated that, Liati Wote had never witnessed a project of this kind, implemented by students from any University in Ghana.

He continued to express his joy, satisfaction, and gratitude to the team for the project.
