Former President John Mahama has advised the Akufo-Addo-led government to be humble and accept that they have failed to properly manage the country’s energy sector. John Mahama said the government needs to face the reality and own up for its mess in the sector.

He said the Nana Addo-led government decided to use the Energy Sector Levy Act (ELSA) as collateral for loans, depriving the sector of funds. That he said is what has led the country to its “doom zone”.

“The country has been plunged into darkness. Mismanagement of our generating assets and collateralization of the ESLA, which was meant to provide the resources to finance current and legacy debt, has led us back into the doom zone.”

He then advised the government to acknowledge that it failed and take responsibility for the challenges the country is facing at present. John Mahama also bemoaned the fact that businesses have been left stranded as they are unable to plan their operations due to the unstable power supply.

“The best government can do is to eat humble pie, take responsibility for the problem, and work to address it. Unfortunately, that is not the case. I’m aware that businesses and households cannot plan because of the erratic power situation.”
