6,000km of roads earmarked for completion by gov’t – Amoako Atta

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Honorable Kwasi Amoako-Atta has stated that government is poised to complete 6,000 kilometers at the end of the year 2021.

At a press briefing in Accra on Sunday 23rd, May 2021, the minister disclosed that 4,000 kilometers of roads are already constructed in the first term of president Nana Akufo-Addo, adding that additional 6,000 kilometers of roads will completed in 2021. He said, all these roads to be completed falls under critical, cocoa, town roads and asphalt overlays and the Sino-hydro Master Project Support Facility.

He said “as part of government’s year of road programme, 81 number of critical roads of total length 2,167.2 kilometers were identified in all the 16 regions of the critical for rehabilitation at a cost of GHS 7.827 billion”.

Giving further details on the critical roads programme, the roads Minister established that some of these roads are, Navrongo to Naga, the Wa to Bulenga to Yaala stretch of roads, Salaga to Ekumdipe to Kpandai road which is about 60% complete, and upgrading of Daboya to Mankarigu road.

On cocoa roads the Minister added that, 325 road projects are ongoing in cocoa growing areas across the country which include the Aboabo to Esikuma to Dunkwa road, Have to Hohoe road, Sefwi to Wiawso to Akontobra stretch, the Dodokorpe to Borae junction road, and Hohoe to Jasikan road.

Rehabilitation of the Gambaga, Nalerigu and Walewale town roads as well as phase 1 of the upgrading of Prestea and Tepa town roads are all part of the 563.3 kilometres of roads are to be completed under the town roads programme at a total cost of GHS1.083 billion.

“The Ministry of Roads and Highways has programmed to undertake 1,500 kilometers of asphaltic overlay in major towns and cities across the country including hospitals, schools, courts, police barracks, army garrisons and other security service compounds” he said.

Speaking on the asphalt overlay programme, the minister said 1,301 kilometres of roads will be completed under this programme in towns such as Obuasi, Kumasi, Akwatia, Winneba, Swedru, Berekum among others, stating that by the end of this government, 3,000 kilometres of roads would have been completed at a cost of GHS 1.665 billion.
