Report reaching Awake News indicate that, a 23-year-old fisherman from Ghana has been shot dead by Guinea-Bissau Navy at the sea shore.
The incident which occurred on August 6, 2021 at exactly 2pm rendered some fisherfolks injured and are receiving treatment at the hospital.
Speaking to Yaw Owusu (Ecowas) of City Limit 93.6 fm, Gambia, one of the victims who was shot said, “we sailed to the sea for fishing and as we were puling out our net after catching some fish, the soldiers came and ordered us to stop so we pleaded with them to allow us descend down and remove our nets, but the soldiers began shooting, leading to the death of my partner”.
The deceased whose name was given as Yaw comes from the Western Region of Ghana but lives in Senegal.
The Fishing sector plays an important role contributing significantly to national economic development objectives related to employment, livelihood support, poverty reduction, food security, foreign exchange earnings and resource sustainability.
About 10% of the country’s population is engaged in various aspects of the fishing industry.
The fisherfolks are, therefore, calling on the government to come to their aid and stop these unfair treatments being meted out to them.
