12-year-old allegedly married to Gborbu Wulomo is under protection – Police

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the 12-year-old girl allegedly married to 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, is under protection and in safe hands pending further investigations.

A statement issued via the Facebook page of the Ghana Police Service revealed that the girl and her mother are under police protection. The statement said,  “Ghana Police Service has identified and located the 12-year-old girl who is alleged to have been married to the 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo in Nungua, Accra. The girl and her mother are currently under police protection.”

Additionally, the police announced that the service is working with the Ministry of Gender, Childrend and Social Protection to provide the young girl with the required support.

“Ghana Police Service is working with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection and the Department of Social Welfare to provide her with the necessary support while the matter is being investigated.”

Background of the Gborbu Wulomo alleged marriage to the 12-year-old girl

News broke over the weekend that a 12-year-old girl at Nungua was married to the Gborbu Wulomo at a ceremony on Saturday, March 30, 2024. The caption that was attached to the video that went viral said the rituals would be completed later to ensure Naa Ayemoede is able to fulfil “all the duties expected of her as the wife of the Gborbu Wulomo.”

After the video went viral, many people and institutions reacted. While others asked for clarity, some others called for the state authorities to act fast to save the girl from abuse. One of the many concerned groups that reacted to the news is the Paediatric Society of Ghana, that said it “strongly condemns any act or perception or facilitation of Child Marriage.”
